Real Weddings by Peter Rowland: Rippon Lea – Megan and Matt

Matt and Megan chose a beautiful garden setting at the historic Rippon Lea Estate to celebrate their special day, a dream of Megan’s since she was a child. Stepping into 19th century luxury, the historic building provided the perfect backdrop for photographer Tania Savage.


Megan’s gown was chosen from Baccini & Hill, echoing simplicity and timeless elegance. The dress selection was simple for Megan who initially saw the dress online. “I tried the dress on one year before the wedding and knew it was the one immediately. Baccini and Hill were fantastic they who were able to work with my limited visits to Australia to make the dress and every time I went for a fitting I loved the dress more and more.”

The bridesmaids wore pale blue Dupioni Silk dresses from Watters, which were tailored by Megan’s mother.

Megan also wore a stunning diamond bracelet from Charles Rose, which was a surprise gift from her fiancé in the lead up to the big day.

The Bride’s mother helped design the stationery which reflected the couple’s garden style wedding. “Mum drew our invitations, RSVPs, envelopes, wedding programs and place cards. She worked via email with me from across the world, and once she had finished the design, I made them all up,” Megan says.

“For as long as I can remember I always wanted to get married at the Rippon Lea Estate. The gardens are beautiful, and there are so many nice places it was hard to chose a ceremony location within the grounds. We loved the idea of having the ceremony and reception rolled into one seamless event. We didn’t want it disjointed by moving locations and Rippon Lea allowed us to do this.”

Brett Currell was responsible for styling throughout the event, with a major emphasis placed on the floral arrangements. For Megan, “Flowers were one of the most important aspects of the wedding. I wanted a garden/flower theme and Brett did an amazing job. He listened to exactly what I wanted and filled me with confidence when we met. When I think back to the day and look through our photos I fall in love with the flowers again. Brett managed to capture exactly what I wanted and exceeded expectations. I still get compliments about the flowers 12 months on from our wedding day!”


Following the ceremony, guests were invited to play a game of croquet on the estate’s expansive lawns.
The couples gave their guests a selection of pale pink, blue and ivory M&Ms, which were selected from the Leicester Square store in London.
Guests enjoyed a three tier wedding cake adorned with fresh blooms from The French Lettuce.

Mt Duneed Estate Wedding Showcase – Talia & Pete

Six years ago, Talia was out with friends at Melbourne hot spot, Cookie, when a handsome barman by the name of Pete, served her up a cocktail. Impressed with his bar skills and taken by his good looks, Talia exchanged flirtatious conversation with the hospitality maestro. The couple of course hit it off and well, never looked back.

A few years later and with a truly romantic proposal hatched, Pete whisked Talia away on a trip to Bruny Island. Knowing how much his future bride-to-be loves lighthouses, Pete took her to the stunning Cape Bruny lighthouse, perched high on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, where he asked Talia to be his wife.Ecstatic, the loved-up couple began planning for their big day with fun high on the agenda. The wedding venue of choice, perfect for the couple’s down to earth approach to life, was the rustic Mt Duneed Estate with the wedding ceremony held amongst the secluded olive groves and the reception celebrations held in the impressive Barrel Hall, under the glow of festoon lighting with long banquet seating and a dance floor large enough for everyone to groove the night away.Surrounded by a talented group of close family and friends, Talia and Pete called on their nearest and dearest to help bring the day together, making everything all the more personal. “Photographer, celebrant, stylist, acoustic musicians, MC, the list goes on. We are very lucky to be surrounded by so many talented creatives”, Talia recalls. Special touches to the day also included a Kombi bridal car and invitations and stationery courtesy of the Groom himself. Of course, not forgetting Pete’s dancing abilities, the couple wowed guests with their own rendition of Dirty Dancing’s “Time of My Life”, complete with a spectacular lift.It was obvious Talia and Pete didn’t leave a stone unturned with their sense of style and fun with the beaming bride admitting there wasn’t one particular part of the day that was the most memorable but rather “the whole thing from start to finish! The Do’s and Dont’s of a Wedding Speech

Nearly everyone at some point will have been witness to a memorable wedding speech. These precious spoken words are more often than not a big part of a Bride and Groom’s celebrations and, good or bad, are a talking point amongst family and friends for weeks to come. So it’s important you get it right. Let’s face it, you want guests to remember your speech for all of the right reasons, not the wrong ones.

Public speaking doesn’t come easily to a lot of people. It can be daunting to stand in front of a room full of people fixated on you as they hang on your every word. What could be worse than delivering the punch line of your best joke with the sound of just a few lonely crickets offering their support whilst those sitting before you stare in bewilderment?Having been in the wedding business for more than 50 years, you can image how many speeches the team here at PRC headquarters have witnessed over their time. Fear not about your impending moment in the spotlight, we’re here to help with the best of our “Do’s” and “Dont’s” to writing a great wedding speech.


Unless you’re a Hollywood actor, the chances of you remembering your speech, especially if you’re one to get a little nervous, are slim. Write it down. Print out your speech on A4 paper or use index cards and be sure to staple them together – you don’t want play “Pick Up 52” with all eyes on you!Ask the Bride and Groom to check with the venue if they have a lectern and hands free microphone you can use. There is nothing worse than fumbling with sheets of paper as you try and flick through your notes with one hand whilst the other clumsily holds onto the microphone for dear life. A lectern will give you space to place and organise your notes and if you’re nervous with an unsteady hand, it will be less noticeable with a hands free microphone. Plus, you can always hold onto the lectern to hide any nervous shaking.


Apologies in advance to all of the loving and doting fathers out there but we know once you have a microphone in hand and everyone’s full attention, you’ll want to keep talking about how wonderful your son or daughter is. And why wouldn’t you? It’s his or her wedding day and you’re as proud as punch! The important thing to remember is to keep the speech short. Very short. No, no, we’re not talking 20 minutes, we’re talking just five… OK, ten at the absolute most if you’d like to include a couple of mischievous childhood wrong doings.We once witnessed a Father of the Bride speak for 45 minutes despite the bride having insisted during the planning stages that Dad wasn’t much of a talker and would only need a few minutes allocated in the running schedule. Needless to say, Dad was promptly wound up by a member of the family upon advice from the event staff that the delicious steak he’d paid for 150 people to enjoy was about to go from medium-rare to “I need a butcher’s knife to cut this thing”.Groomsmen, you shouldn’t ignore this advice either. We’re aware many of you like to “wing it” but without something written down to keep you on track, you tend to go on, and on, with a tendency to drift off topic. You’re better to keep it short and sweet with a few humourous lines thrown in about the groom for good measure rather than have the guests willing you to wrap it up.

Remember, this is not your 15 minutes of fame. You’re there to tell a few humourous or sentimental stories of the Bride and Groom. Yes, you’ve shared many an adventure with your best friend and lived to tell the tale but you’ve been chosen to speak because of your in-depth knowledge of the Bride and Groom. Once you write your speech, re-read it and consider how many times you refer to yourself. And above all, don’t tell private “in” jokes. It doesn’t matter how hilarious you and your close group of friends think your story is, most of the guests will have no clue what you’re on about and swiftly tune out.


For Brides and Grooms considering where to put speeches into the running schedule, try and break them up. You want to ensure you keep your guests attention so any more than 20-30 minutes of speeches will be just too much before their minds begin to wonder if they made the right choice of stiletto shoe or patterned tie. Allocate 5 minutes to each of your speakers (trust us, give them ten and they’ll speak for 20!) and throw in a 5 minute buffer, just in case. It’s a good idea to break the speeches up to a maximum of two or three at any one time. We recommend the Fathers’ first, followed by the Groomsmen and Bridesmaids and finally the Bride and Groom. Two to three sets of speeches will be much more enjoyable for your guests and ensure their attention is retained.


If a shot of vodka is what you need to take the edge off and give you a little boost of confidence then go for it. But stop at one. The same goes with a casual glass of wine or beer. Throwing back that second serve of Dutch Courage can often open the doomed doors to Tipsyville, where no-one else finds your jokes funny and old Aunt Maple sits in shock with her jaw on the ground as you throw in a few colourful profanities. We do suggest though that you take a glass of champagne when you get up to speak and always remember to toast the Bride and Groom. For our dapper Best Men out there, we also recommended you offer a toast to the beautiful Bridesmaids.



Don’t forget to thank those who have contributed to the wedding and to those who have travelled distances to attend. We also recommend you mention those who have passed or who were unable to travel for whatever reason. And whilst they’re not too common these days, ensure the Best Man or MC reads any telegrams sent from family and friends unable to share your day in person (for those too young to remember, please insert “e-mail” in place of telegram)


So, remember these tips and you’ll be on track to make the final cut of the wedding video. Good luck with your preparations and of course, no pressure!

Rippon Lea House & Gardens – Sarah & Jarryd

Sarah and Jarryd grew up together in South Gippsland but officially caught each other’s eyes seven years ago at the Inverloch Hotel. The couple admit that whilst they knew early on they would spend the rest of their lives together, there were in no rush to tie the knot. “We were both quite young and still had some growing up to do” says Sarah.

When the time did come to pop the question, Jarryd and Sarah went for a casual walk with their beloved golden retriever before Jarryd found a private space and asked Sarah to marry to him. Sarah, initially in shock with the surprise proposal, of course said yes and with a stunning engagement ring now on her finger, began searching for the perfect Melbourne wedding venue. “We really wanted the wedding to reflect the simplicity and the easiness of our love. We just wanted it to be as representative of us as possible”.

The beautiful couple wanted a celebration where young and old could walk away having had a great time and a memorable experience. Rippon Lea House & Gardens proved to be the perfect setting for their dream day. Whilst traditional and elegant, the venue lent itself to a relaxed atmosphere with the expansive gardens an ideal choice for Sarah & Jarryd’s ceremony and wedding photographs. Sarah had a sign made as a surprise for Jarryd that was placed at the poolside bar with “Mr & Mrs Roughy” shining brightly in neon letters, which the couple could keep to hang in their home. But the glowing bride says the most memorable moment was definitely the couple’s first dance to London Grammar’s “Strong”, Sarah recalls, “There is something really amazing about the first dance. It’s just yourself and your partner and nothing else influences that moment”.

A big focus for the evening’s celebrations was the alfreso entertaining space, perfectly styled the Tori Allen team. The couple’s family and friends made the most of the opportunity to let their hair down, dancing the night away on the terrace dance floor and enjoying cocktails by the pool.

The loved up couple took a short honeymoon on the sunshine coast, relaxing and sunning it up in Noosa, before returning to married life in Melbourne. Port Melbourne Yacht Club – Lauren & Andrew

Ten years earlier, Lauren had met Andrew whilst wandering around the residential campus during their studies at Melbourne University. Never did she imagine a decade later standing in an apartment in Florence where that same handsome guy dropped to one knee and proposed before whisking her away to a lookout to watch the sunset over a romantic Tuscan picnic.

 Lauren knew exactly what she was looking for when she began the hunt for a Melbourne wedding venue, focusing on good food, great wine and an excellent band. “Most importantly”, recalls Lauren, “we just wanted everyone to have fun”. So when the couple stumbled across Port Melbourne Yacht Club, they knew immediately it was perfect for the relaxed and intimate celebration they had been dreaming of.

It’s always a bride’s dream to have a wedding she can call her own, something truly memorable, and of course, a wedding should always be as unique as each individual couple. Andrew’s younger brother, Sam, struck up the courage to steal the limelight during the ceremony for just a moment with a touching reading, creating a connection between a family who have been together for years and one that was just beginning.

Whilst the couple, with bridal party in tow, ventured along Port Melbourne beach and down to St Vincent Gardens in Albert Park for photos, guests enjoyed drinks on the deck before taking their seats in the dining room with tables touchingly named after the role each group of guests had played in the couple’s lives.

Lauren opted to style the Yacht Club simply, with fresh blooms in green and white with hints of dusty pink, whilst careful to keep the main focal point on the stunning backdrop that was the Port Melbourne Beach front – a beautiful setting for balmy summer nights and refreshing cocktails over the water.

To open the celebrations, the couple chose to stray from the norm with a lively first dance routine to Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk”, thoroughly impressing their guests and setting the mood for the rest of the evening. With memorable speeches aplenty and laughs all round, a delectable dinner served to satisfy even the fussiest of eaters and glasses topped up with fine wine, guests then danced long into the night with Lauren and Andrew not missing a beat

After their nearest and dearest bid them farewell, Lauren and Andrew headed off to the stunning Cook Islands, in keeping with the beach side theme, for some much needed “R&R”, surrounded by turquoise waters and a warm tropical sun. We wish the couple every happiness and thank them for choosing to celebrate at the Port Melbourne Yacht Club.

‘Tis The Season To Be Engaged – A Girls Guide To Diamonds

We’re so excited to be back into the swing of things here at Weddings Head Quarters. And it’s no secret that while we were away over indulging in all things festive, many of you were saying “Yes” to those four little words “Will you marry me?”

For those with a fiancé too nervous to make the big purchase without you, you’re probably beside yourself with excitement, itching to hit the streets in search of the perfect piece of bling. But do you really know what you’re looking for, what the jeweller is on about when you hear the words clarity or carat? Well here’s a quick guide to everything you need to know about your next big purchase. Just remember, it’s all about the 4 C’s – Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat.


The cut doesn’t refer to a diamond’s shape but the proportion and arrangement of its sides and the quality of workmanship. The cut is a diamond’s most important characteristic, giving it the greatest influence on the overall appearance and determining what we generally refer to as “sparkle”. The amount of “brilliance” and sparkle in a diamond is defined by the cut with grades ranging from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Poor.’

In a well cut diamond a large percentage of light that enters the stone gets reflected back into the observer’s eye, giving it a bright looking appearance. In a poorly cut diamond, the light that enters reaches the sides and ‘leaks’ from the bottom of the stone, rather than reflecting back into the eye, giving it less “brilliance”.


Diamonds are found in almost every colour imaginable. In fact, it’s rare to find a diamond that doesn’t have colour. Essentially, a colourless diamond allows more light to pass through it and emits more “sparkle” than a coloured one meaning, the lesser the diamond’s colour, the greater its value.

Particularly coloured diamonds don’t follow this rule however and are usually quite rare and expensive, ranging in colour from blues to greens and bright yellows. Extremely rare and highly sort after coloured diamonds include pink, red, blue and orange.

A colour grading is given to a diamond ranging from D to Z, with D containing the least amount of colour and Z containing the strongest colour.

Diamonds graded from D through to F are naturally the most valuable and desirable because of their rarity but you can still find beautiful diamonds that are graded slightly less than colourless ones such as those graded from G through to I which virtually no colour to the untrained eye.


Because diamonds are naturally created under an immense amount of pressure, most will display flaws of some kind. A diamond’s “clarity” grade refers to its flaws, or lack thereof, for which there are two types; Blemishes, found on the surface of the diamond (external flaws like scratches and chips) and Inclusions, found within the diamond (internal flaws such as air bubbles, cracks and crystals).

The fewer the flaws a diamond has, the higher its clarity grade and value. A flawless diamond shows no external blemishes or inclusions with the lowest clarity grade exhibiting a heavily “included” diamond with large visible flaws. Because they are less common, diamonds with no or few inclusions and blemishes are more highly valued and priced.

4. THE CARAT (Weight)

Carat, or weight, is a feature of diamonds for which many people have misconceptions. To set you straight it’s important to know that one carat is equal to 200 milligrams (0.2 grams). Carats however are also divided into points with one point representing one hundredth of a carat. In other words, one carat is equal to 200 milligrams or 100 “points”.

When shopping for an engagement ring it’s important to remember the difference between Carat Weight and Total Weight (total weight referred to as CTW or TDW). If a ring’s price tag says “1 CTW” it is referring to the sum of weight of all diamonds in it. This does not however tell you anything about the weight of any single stone in the ring. Remember: Carat Weight refers to the weight of a single diamond where as Total Carat Weight refers to sum the individual carat weights of all the diamonds.

Did you know, the word “carat” is taken from the carob seeds that were once used to balance scales? The seeds are so uniform in shape and weight that even today’s technology cannot detect more than three one-thousandths of a difference between them.

So, you can now confidently shop for your engagement ring with your Groom-To-Be. Although, you will need to consider which colour gold you want, and of course which shape diamond to go for and the setting… But let’s leave that for another day.

Newport Substation – Meagan & Simon

We all know the two main philosophies when it comes to love, “great things take time” and “when you know, you know”. On the rare occasion a great love story can abide by both of these rules and for Meagan and Simon this couldn’t have been more true.

Despite knowing each other for many years as friends, Meagan and Simon found themselves in serious relationships with other people and travelling the globe independently until one day they finally reconnected. Going on their first date only a few days later it was “all over after that, moving in together six weeks later”, Meagan recalls. And of course, after falling madly in love, all that was left to do was plan their dream wedding.

Meagan and Simon knew they wanted to keep their wedding personal, intimate and simple, an authentic representation of their love. The main focus was to keep the day fun and light hearted whilst ensuring none of the vibe was lost by big breaks in the celebrations. Meagan also wanted a big focus on incredible wedding catering, opting for shared, family style dining with the food laid on thick down the table with all of their delighted guests serving themselves. Moving away from a traditional wedding cake, the couple opted for something a little more low key with a bountiful donut bar.

With hearts filled with love and tummy’s filled with the most delectable of dishes the newly-weds and their guests wasted no time hitting the dance floor for one of the most animated dance sessions that we have been fortunate to witness.
